Susan Fernandez April 04 2022

The farmhouse style becomes more and more popular in recent years. If you want to add a touch of farmhouse style to your home, this bookshelf is a great project. It's easy to build and only requires a few materials.

Is it cheaper to build your own shelf?

It is often more expensive to buy the materials for garage shelves than prefabricated ones. Just make certain you do everything correctly the first time around. If you don't, it'll cost you more time and money in the long run. You may make your own if you choose, allowing you to build shelving that meets your precise demands.

When you build your own shelves, you can make them any size you want. You're not limited by standard sizes like you are when you buy shelving units from a store. This means you can build shelves that fit perfectly in your space, making the most of the available storage.

You also have complete control over the materials used to build your shelves. This allows you to match the shelving to the décor of your home or garage. Building your own shelves also gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment. There's nothing like looking at a shelf you built yourself and knowing that you did it!

The average cost to construct a bookcase listed above is an estimate of how much it will cost to have someone else do the work. How much does it cost to build a bookcase? The cost of building a simple bookcase without any special features is $275, as opposed to $978 for hiring a carpenter. Building your own bookcase will save you almost two-thirds the cost of having someone else do it.

What tools do I need to build a bookshelf?

For basic hand tools, you'll require a portable circular saw, a hammer, block plane, combination square, tape measure, metal rule, two clamps, nail set, and putty knife. You may also need a power drill and bits, screwdriver, belt sander, palm sander, and wood glue.

If you don't have any of these tools, you can usually rent them from a local hardware store. You may also be able to find some of them second-hand. Building your own farmhouse bookshelf is a great way to add storage to your home without breaking the bank. With a little time and effort, you can build a beautiful shelf that will last for years to come.

How thick should wood be for shelves?

Use 3/4-inch thick materials for shelf and bookcase construction. If you're working with solid hardwood, you may go up to 1 1/4 inches thick for almost limitless support. This style of shelf resembles a fireplace and is costly, but it provides a gorgeous artisan look.

When working with MDF or other composite materials, always use a minimum of 3/4-inch thick wood for shelves. These composites are not as strong as solid hardwoods, so they require thicker boards to provide adequate support. Thinner boards can be used for decorative features like trim, but they should never be used for structural elements like shelves.

Now that you know how to build a farmhouse bookshelf, get creative and make one that fits your style.

How much does wood cost to build a shelf?

The cost of built-in bookshelves ranges from $2,500 to $5,000, with the average homeowner spending around $3,500 to install 5 linear feet of built-in wood shelves. How do you make a metal homemade bookshelf?

If wood is not enough of a challenge for you, try building a bookshelf out of metal. This may not be the most traditional option, but it will definitely add a unique touch to any room. You'll need to have some basic welding skills to complete this project, but don't let that intimidate you – with a little practice anyone can learn to weld.

First, gather your supplies. You'll need some metal sheets (preferably steel or iron), a welder, and some clamps. You'll also need a drill and some drill bits, as well as a saw if you're going to cut the metal yourself. If you're not confident in your welding skills, you can always enlist the help of a friend or professional. Here is the full instruction for you:

Step1. Cut your metal sheets to size. If you're using iron or steel, you'll need to cut them with a power saw.

Step2. Use the welder to attach the pieces of metal together. Make sure that you weld them together at all four corners.

Step3. Use the clamps to secure the metal sheets together while you weld them. This will help to ensure that they're properly aligned.

Step4. Once the welding is complete, allow the metal to cool completely before moving on to the next step.

Step5. Drill holes in the top and bottom of each sheet of metal. These holes will be used to attach the shelves to the bookshelf frame.

Step6. Use the welder to attach the shelves to the frame. Make sure that the shelves are level before you weld them in place.

Step7. Once the welding is complete, allow the metal to cool completely before moving on to the next step.

Step8. Paint or finish the bookshelf as desired. You can use any type of paint or finish that you like, but make sure that it's compatible with metal.

And there you have it! Your very own DIY metal bookshelf. This project is definitely not for everyone, but it's a great way to add a unique touch to your home décor. If you're not confident in your welding skills, don't hesitate to enlist the help of a friend or professional. With a little practice, anyone can learn to weld.

How do you make industrial farmhouse shelves with paper?

For this DIT project you will need:

  • 1/4″ thick MDF or hardwood plywood (you can use MDF because it’s cheaper and easier to work with)
  • Tape measure
  • Circular saw or jigsaw
  • High-grit sandpaper (at least 220)
  • Stain (use Minwax early American)
  • Polyurethane
  • Clamps
  • Paintbrush
  • Cutter knife

First, cut your boards to size. If you want yours to be about 24″ long, you had to rip them down for me at the hardware store. You could also use a circular saw or jigsaw if you don’t have access to a table saw.

Next, sand your boards until they’re nice and smooth. You can use 220-grit sandpaper if you want a really smooth finish.

Once the boards are sanded, it’s time to stain them. We have used Minwax Early American because we wanted a dark, rich color. You can use any stain that you like – just be sure to test it on a scrap piece of wood first.

After the stain is dry, it’s time to apply the polyurethane. We like to use a brush-on type because it’s easy to apply and doesn’t require any special equipment. Just be sure to follow the directions on the can.

Once the polyurethane is dry, your shelves are ready to use! You can hang them on the wall with some simple hardware, or you can prop them up on a table or desk. Either way, they make a great addition to any room.

If you want to add a little extra something, you can always stencil or paint them. We used a simple farmhouse stencil to add some interest.

This is a really easy project that anyone can do – no matter your skill level. And the best part is that it doesn’t take very long, so you can have new shelves in no time at all. So what are you waiting for? Give it a try today!

How do you make a farming floating shelf?

Floating shelves are a great way to add extra storage to your home without taking up too much space. And what's even better is that they can be easily customized to fit your own personal style.

If you're looking for a rustic farmhouse look, then this DIY farmhouse bookshelf is the perfect project for you. It's easy to make and only requires a few supplies that you probably already have around the house.

Here's what you'll need to make your own DIY farmhouse bookshelf:

  • 1x12 piece of lumber (8 ft long)
  • Circular saw
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • 2 L-brackets
  • 3/4 inch screws
  • Drill

Guide:

First, you'll need to cut your piece of lumber down to size. You'll want two pieces that are about 2 feet long and two pieces that are about 1 foot long. Once you have your pieces cut, it's time to sand them down (if you're using new lumber). This step is optional, but it will help give your shelves a nice smooth finish.

Now it's time to stain or paint your shelves (again, this step is optional). If you decide to stain your shelves, make sure to use a pre-stain conditioner first. This will help the stain go on evenly and prevent any blotching.

Once your stain or paint is dry, it's time to attach the L-brackets. Place one bracket in each corner of your shelves and use the screws that come with the brackets to secure them in place. Now all you have to do is hang your shelves on the wall and load them up with books, plants, or whatever else you want to display!

Have you ever wanted to add some extra storage to your home but didn't want to sacrifice style? Well, now you don't have to with this DIY farmhouse bookshelf. It's easy to make and can be customized to perfectly fit your own personal style. So what are you waiting for? Get started on your own project today!
